"I was drawn to the gearing system for the textile industry 'The Horsfall grinder' in particular. I wanted to isolate the simple geometric principle behind the complex shapes. My work is bas relief and the cogs lend themselves to that interpretation. I like the pun of describing textile machinery in textile media - a soft surface depicting a hard one, using an industrial felt material.
In this piece I wanted to pay homage to the disappearing industry that I have been so privileged to experience at close quarters in my work as a rug maker.
Allowed in alone, I used one sweetly running machine among all the silent ones in a massive redundant winding room, since demolished. I didn't have the foresight to record it, I'm grateful that Bradford Textile Archive did."
